На мысе Казантип даже есть своя собственная Долина Привидений с целыми шеренгами изваяний, колонн, циклопических стен и застывших в камне монстров. Береговые скальные хаосы изобилуют гротами и волно-прибойными нишами. Вода и ветер изваяли в обрывах мыса Казантип профиль Суворова и профиль Сталина, есть там также и Дырявый мыс со сквозным гротом. Славится своими фигурами выветривания и «младший брат» мыса Казантип – мыс Зюк у поселка Курортное (Мама Русская).</ins></div></td></tr>

Протяжённость с запада на восток около 90 км, с севера на юг от 17 до 50 км. Площадь порядка 2700 — 3000 км². Полуостров омывается на севере [[Азовское море|Азовским морем]], а в западной части его заливом [[Сиваш]], на востоке — [[Керченский пролив|Керченским проливом]], на юге — [[Чёрное море|Чёрным морем]]. На западе полуостров соединён с остальным Крымом узким [[Акманайский перешеек|Акманайским перешейком]] около 17 км в ширину. В некоторых возвышенных местах перешейка видны одновременно оба моря: и Азовское, и Чёрное.<br />

Северо-восточная часть полуострова холмистая (высотой до 190 м), сложена преимущественно [[известняк|известняками]], [[глина|глинами]] и [[песчаник|песчаниками]]. Много [[Грязевые вулканы Крыма|грязевых вулканов]]. Юго-западная часть Керченского полуострова равнинная, сложена в основном [[палеоген]]овыми глинами. На полуострове расположены несколько крупных озёр (солёных) и русла временных водотоков. Рек с постоянным стоком нет, самая крупная пересыхающая река — [[Самарли]]. <br />

Климат умеренно-континентальный, с относительно мягкой почти бесснежной зимой и жарким и сухим летом. Середня температура января -1,5 °С, июля +23,5 °С. Осадков выпадает менее 500 мм в год. Наблюдаются сильные восточные и северо-востоные ветра. <br />

Почвы - южные черноземы и тёмно-каштановые, часто засоленные. Большая часть земель распахана. На Керченском полуострове находится [[Керченский железнорудный бассейн]].<br />

== Геологическое строение Керченского полуострова ==<br />

Керченский полуостров интересен тем, что является неким тектоническим «мостом» от Европы к Азии, звеном Альпийского пояса гор, который соединяет [[Крым]] и Кавказ. Многие геологические объекты и явления Керченского полуострова сходны с российским Таманским полуостровом.<br />
С другой стороны, а точнее – по меридиану, железные руды Керчи это переотложенные, то есть размытые водой, а затем перемещенные на юг породы Донбасса<ref>Сетевой ресурс: kerchland.com/geology.htm</ref>. <br />

В профессиональной подготовке геологов многих стран Керченский регион на протяжении всего 20 века и сейчас играет роль учебного полигона (региона студенческих геологических практик), где можно освоить общие геологические закономерности. Уже в середине 19 века, как следует из прекрасных путевых заметок бельгийского геолога и натуралиста Дюбуа де Монпере, лучшие геологи Западной Европы выстраивали свои модели геологической истории Керченского полуострова и Тамани.<br />
<br />
Во всех популярных геологических путеводителях по Крыму особое место уделяются Керченскому полуострову. Издаются и специальные учебные пособия для студентов с маршрутами геологических экскурсий по региону Керчи, а также готовятся объекты показа и описания экскурсий для международных геологических конгрессов и семинаров.<br />

Объекты Керченского полуострова замечательным образом сочетают в себе задачи и решения как теоретического, так и промыслового (практического характера), а также вопросы тектоники, сейсмики, геоморфологии, экологии. Геологические достопримечательности региона дают наглядное представление о скорости и механизмах современных геологических процессов: оползней, оврагов, обвалов, осыпей, разрушения и переотложения пляжей, просадок грунтов в результате подземной выработки полезных ископаемых, сейсмической активности в результате заполнения водохранилищ или выработки карьеров. Объекты карста (выщелачивания известняка дождевой водой и снегом) на Керченском полуострове не поражают грандиозностью. Известняк пористый, неплотный, карст не создает в нем значительных по объему полостей. Но даже небольшой камень, изъеденный водой, поражает красотой и причудливостью своих линий.<br />
<br />
Процессы выветривания известняков (выветривание – неудачный перевод немецкого слова фервиттерунг от веттер – погода) в результате деятельности ветра, воды, мороза, волно-прибойной деятельности моря и биологических факторов создали и продолжают создавать на берегах Керченского полуострова удивительные природные скульптуры. На мысе Казантип даже есть своя собственная Долина Привидений с целыми шеренгами изваяний, колонн, циклопических стен и застывших в камне монстров. Береговые скальные хаосы изобилуют гротами и волно-прибойными нишами. Вода и ветер изваяли в обрывах мыса Казантип профиль Суворова и профиль Сталина, есть там также и Дырявый мыс со сквозным гротом. Славится своими фигурами выветривания и «младший брат» мыса Казантип – мыс Зюк у поселка Курортное (Мама Русская).<br />
Над карманными пляжами (их называют Генеральские или Золотые) между населенными пунктами Золотое и Курортное множество красивейших скал, образующих оползневые цирки. Цирк в данном случае почти круглый естественный амфитеатр с постепенным спуском природных ступеней от возвышающейся холмистой равнины к морю. Стены этого амфитеатра хранят не только следы современных оползневых процессов, которые легко видеть по разрывам в травяном покрове, но и древние тектонические швы, по которым происходил разрыв пластов известняка и их смещение по вертикали и горизонтали.<br />
<br />
Самое удивительное: окончательного решения загадочных особенностей геологии Керчи и Тамани так и не найдено. А ведь здесь множество полезных ископаемых, в том числе нефть и природный газ, так что исследования продолжаются, а регион все еще очень «диссертабельный».<br />
Да и обычный турист, ознакомившийся хоть с тремя-четырьми книгами разных авторов, на самом объекте имеет возможность самостоятельно выбрать или определить решение, пусть даже не для высокой науки, а только для себя. Но геологические процессы – это часть нашей жизни. Даже изменение пляжной полосы после шторма, обычное для [[Азовское море|Азовского моря]], это тоже геологический процесс. А уж при выборе дачи на берегу моря, о геологии, геоморфологии и сейсмике надо думать очень серьезно.<br />

[[Крымские горы]] являются одним из звеньев огромного пояса горных хребтов, который называется Альпийским. Но даже на первый взгляд человеку, знакомому с Кавказом или Карпатами, горы Крыма покажутся не только невысокими, но и несколько нетипичными по форме. Дело в том, что в теории новой глобальной тектоники яйлы и предгорья Крыма вовсе не считаются горами. Это лишь приподнятый на километровую высоту край платформы.<br />
<br />
Для рельефа Керченского полуострова В.Г. Ена применяет своеобразное выражение «Керченское холмогорье». Горой в географии считаются только высоты от 200 метров, которых в Керченском регионе нет. Но и холмы – это лишь некие «складки» равнинного рельефа. Хребты Керченского полуострова – это горы из наклонных пластов известняка. <br />
<br />
Как и все платформы (например, Восточно-Европейская) Крымские горы и Керченский полуостров имеют «двухэтажное строение» - складчатый фундамент из причудливо смятых таврических сланцев и плоский чехол известняков.<br />
<br />
Но в отличие от Яйлы в основании этих пластов залегают не складки таврических сланцев, а очень пластичные глины. К тому же через глубокие трещины из этих глин постоянно выбрасывается энергия, газы и органические соединения. Грязевые вулканы, помимо всего прочего, еще и «снижают рейтинг» керченским пластам известняка. Формально, даже вершины [[Казантип]]а и массива [[Опук]] это только холмы. <br />
